Carolina WrenNovember 2004

Sue put out a suet feeder a couple of weeks ago to attract woodpeckers (to State College, Pennsylvania). In addition to the downy woodpecker showing up, just about every perching bird around has had its whack at the suet.

It was a very pleasant surprise when a Carolina wren appeared.

After a minute or two of inspection, the wren went after the suet with gusto.

The wren's technique was very straightforward (it's very handy having a long bill), compared with chickadees (hanging upside-down) or nuthatches (being upside-down).
