Hummingbird Clearwing, 2022
Hemaris thysbe
(A hummingbird moth)
4 Sept. 2022

After 5 years, I feel that it is time to revisit the hummingbird clearwing (Hemaris thysbe), not only a remarkably beautiful and fascnating daytime moth but also one that I can photograph from my backyard.

The hummingbird clearwing feeds via hovering next to its blossom of choice (a butterfly bush here).

It necktars via its long proboscis.

In between feeding and while hovering to its next choice, the hummingbird moth curls its proboscis.

While I choose high shutter speeds when I can, there is much to be said for the wing blur at slower camera speeds.

Sometimes I'm grateful on having a low-light condition (that is, being forced to use a slower shutter speed).

Photography note: The photos were taken with a Pentax K3-II, with the Pentax SMC-A* 200mm macro lens, during July and August 2022.
