Canace the Bald Eagle
First Flight after Release
Jan. 28, 2013

This is a continuation page from Canace (the release), which occurred on Thursday, 17 January 2013, and it shows the return to the wild of Canace the bald eagle at Cowanesque Lake.

The moment of excitement came when Robyn Graboski, director of Centre Wildlife Care, opened the crate door. It took Canace a few minutes to decide whether to come out, but once he did decide, Canace was aloft within a second.

The following is my favorite: Canace's power flap. (And credit to the eagle scouts who built Canace's exercise cage: Canace was fit!)

Wings spread wide, Canace ventures higher in the sky.

Canace's first flight covered about 300 yards. He remained perched in a tree and surveying his domain from all directions while we packed up and left.

Success!

The rescue and recovery of Canace involved many people who all deserve our deepest thanks. I'm taking the following credits from an e-mail of Robyn's:
  • The anonymous finder who notified the Army Corp of Engineers that they bird was sitting along the road
  • The Army Corp of Engineers who retrieved the bird and took it to a local veterinarian
  • Dr. Kreger who provided initial medical care
  • Tony Ross, Game Commission Biologist, who drove the bird from Tioga County to Centre Wildlife Care
  • Animal Medical Hospital who provided medical advice
  • Dr. Eric Miller and Dr. Sallie Welte from Tri-State who provided medical advice
  • All the wonderful volunteers at CWC who helped care for the bird who was quite a handful.

Complete background information on Canace's rescue and recovery is at the website of Centre Wildlife Care. Also, by "liking" Centre Wildcare Care on Facebook, you'll come across more photos, videos, and rescue information.

Photo note: I used a Pentax K20D, with the Pentax SMC-DA* 60-250mm lens for first five photos and the Sigma 150-500mm lens for the last photo, all taken on 17 January 2013.
