Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui
Sept. 10, 2014

The painted lady (Vanessa cardui) is a strikingly beautiful medium size butterfly, and I believe these photos do her justice.

I don't see the painted lady as often as the American lady, but that's the difference between the painted lady having one brood a year and the American lady having several.

The most easily noted difference between the painted lady and the American lady is that the former has four "eyes" on the lower hind wing, whereas the American lady has two large eyes.

Photo note: I used the Pentax K20D, with the SMC-A* 200mm macro lens, for the two photos, taken on September 3, 2014.
