Variegated Fritillary
Euptoieta claudia
Sept. 18, 2016

The variegated fritillary (Euptoieta claudia) is a mid-size fritillary and has a striking pattern.

I had come across years ago, and then last year and this year, I've had a number of encounters with variegated fritillaries, which I value highly.

The backlight here highlights the colors while not disrupting the below-wing pattern.

My kneeling allowed good eye-to-eye contact with this variegated fritillary.

This year, a variegated fritillary came to a butterfly bush in my backyard, but I've had the most photo luck with them at the Snetsinger Butterfly Garden.

Photo note: I used the Pentax K3, with the SMC-A* 200mm macro lens, for the photos, which were taken in August and September 2016 at the Snetsinger Butterfly Garden in State College, Pennsylvania.
