The Samer, or Lapps, are among the more distant inhabitants of Scandinavia, living farther north than anyone else. In old Scandinavian writing, they are generally portrayed very mystically, very akin to magic. The pipe, then, incorporates a star motif from rock carvings -- here seen at the end of the shank. And the background to these page incorporates a reindeer motif -- often engraved on magic drums.
