The indigo bunting is a remarkably pretty and bright blue finch.

  I don't quite understand the color variation, but the following is a darker indigo bunting.
 
Dark indigo bunting
 
  The female bunting has some brown mixed with the blue, so the first two photos as well as the following are of males.

The third photo is a rear view, showing the dark wings.

The young, or immature, indigo bunting is a brown bird (and I needed the help of the State College Bird Club in order to identify it).

Photo note: I used a Pentax *ist D, with the SMC 1000mm reflex lens. The photos date from today (the first one) to September 2006 (the young bunting).
