Black-Billed CuckooJuly 2006

Before the leaf cover became too dense, I was able to photograph a few black-billed cuckoos. Following is one sequence of right, center, and left.

Black-billed cuckoo: right

The black-billed cuckoo is a long, slender bird, with a brownish-tan back and wings and with a white breast. It also has "half moons" on the end of its tail feathers.

Cuckoos eat bugs.

Black-billed cuckoo: center

The adult has, as seen below, a red eye ring.

Black-billed cuckoo: left

Black-billed cuckoos build their own nests; however, they're also opportunistic and occasionally leave their eggs in the nests of other birds.

Photo note: I used a Pentax *ist D, with the SMC 1000mm reflex lens, for these photos, which were taken in May 2006.
