Baltimore Checkerspot Euphydryas phaeton | July 5, 2014 |
One definition of happiness is coming across (for me) a new butterfly, especially one as beautiful as the Baltimore checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton). |
I was wandering about the Toftrees game land, just north of where I live, when I had spotted the butterfly. At first I thought it was something familiar, but the closer I came, the more I realized that I had never seen one before. |
The Baltimore checkerspot and I wandered about a meadow. Each time when I thought I was going to lose sight of it, the checkerspot landed, giving me another photo op. |
At home, it was one of those rare times when I could immediately ID the butterfly without having to examine the photos first. I do hope I come across another Baltimore checkerspot.
Photo note: I used the Pentax K20D, with the SMC-A* 200mm macro lens, on June 27, 2014, for these photos. |
